Companion CD- Baritone Solos Book
By Heidi Schmidt
This is a response to the previous review. While I admire anyone who buys a book of serious solos just for the value of learning, the previous review unfairly maligns the book and the CD. Firstly, anyone who cannot read music will have a difficult time learning any song they are not already familiar with. The CD with piano only should be exactly that, as it is meant for the student to practice with even when they do not have an accompanist present, as these songs are not meant to be self-accompanied. To have vocals on the CD would defeat the ability of the student to practice hearing their own voice singing the song. As for them all being obscure religious songs. These are not pop songs, these are art songs from various periods and the majority of music written prior to the 19th century was religious since the church was the patron of the arts and almost all fine arts were produced in its service. Hal Leanord publishes many pop and broadway collections, as well as more classically oriented collections usually used in the course of serious musical study, of which this is one. I would recommend it for a baritone/bass beginning serious vocal study.

A Worthy Investment
By Jonathan S
Some context for this book and the others in this series: Joan Frey Boytim was an established voice teacher for many years. These books can be seen as selections that she would assign to her beginning students, a first anthology (with others to follow).
The intended audience is *not* for the individual who is trying to teach themselves how to sing, as one disappointed reviewer has suggested. The first line in the preface starts: "Repertoire for the beginning voice student, whether teenager, college student, or adult..." followed shortly by "This series of books... provides a comprehensive collection of songs suitable for first and second year students of any age, but is compiled with the needs of a young singer in mind." The proper user of this book is either for the teacher looking for songs to assign to his/her student, or for a person **already taking voice lessons with an instructor.** Presumably, technique and music reading is being taught concurrently with the songs in this book - the book will supplement the learning in those areas.
I have owned and use the book regularly. I have been a teacher for many years, and nearly all of my students wind up getting a First Book of ... Solos after the first few months of lessons. Furthermore, as an active singer, there are pieces in here that I continue to use in my professional life for concerts, recitals, church services, and the like.
Some criticism is warranted, however: the book is a wee bit dated. Modern anthologies contain original texts, translations, comments on the historical context of the pieces, and a uniform method of setting the music. This is more like a bound book of photocopies from a teacher's personal collection. The songs come from a variety of sources, and often use the exact same prints as the originals from which they come. The only people that it should bother are those nit-picks who are bothered by formating. I, as one of them, find the wherewithall to look past that slight.
A second criticism/comment: This book has a deliberate focus on English-language pieces. As a private voice teacher, I want to give my students more variety and some more recognizable, mainstream composers. It doesn't cost a star on my review here, though, as that was not inteded by the book, and there is a solution for it: The First Book of Baritone/Bass Solos: Part II. Part II contains pieces that are musically at the same level, but add variety for languages.
Again, I use both books regularly, and they have been a staple in the voice teaching community for many decades. I hope this review helps your choice.

Stardard repertoire for any bass/baritone
By N V-meyer
This book is a widely popular compilation of art songs and arias in many languages for baritones and basses. The selections are oft-heard audition pieces, and the book is required literature for many undergraduate voice students. Joan Frey Boytim is renowned for her myriad compilations, and Hal Leonard (along with others like Alfred and Schirmer) is widely accepted as the standard for vocal music publishing. The CD is a useful practice aid to any student without piano skills, although an accompanist is obviously required for live performances or auditions.
The gentleman who is responsible for BOTH the 1- and 2-star ratings (with the same odd review posted under each) is tragically weighing down the average review for this book. I can't imagine what he expected. This book is exactly what it sets out to be - a book of sheet music for medium/low voice men.
