In sickness and in health

A terrific read that will suck you into the bizarre world of severe mental illness. You will not be able to put this book down once you start. Ms Gibson has written this astonishing story with passion at the most humanistic level. She has shared her most inner and private thoughts to relay the events that nearly destroyed their vows of sickness and in health. This book is very unique as this story is told by both husband and wife. Regardless of your interest in mental illness, you will be moved by this love story. By the end of the book I was left cheering this family on for a successful recovery.

Revealing first-hand account of a family's challenging journey coping with Schizophrenia

I wouldn't feel comfortable beginning this review without first thanking Marion and John Gibson for sharing their story. I hope in the not too distant future that we as a society find it common place to talk about mental illness more often than just when tragedy strikes and a haphazard link between it and mental illness is tossed out by the media. Indeed I'd love it if we could find another term than "mental illness" to use when referencing schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and clinical depression. Because the term "mental illness" falsely differentiates these conditions from so-called "physical" ones as if the causes of the former are any less organic than the latter.
I thought the last few chapters effectively summarised circumstances that many people who suffer from mental illness can relate to, as well as their loved ones, and the author conveys the most important message of the story, which is that mental illness is not uncommon, it's not a character flaw, and society continues to stigmatise illnesses that could benefit the most from the support of others. I wish this chapter had been at the beginning of the book because unfortunately I fear some people who need to hear that message the most will not read to the end of the book. I particularly liked the passage at the end by the psychiatrist.
This story doesn't reflect well on the Canadian healthcare system clearly, but hopefully it can be a catalyst for change.
I would recommend this book to anyone suffering from a mental illness, particularly those seeking to learn more about schizophrenia, but quite frankly I'd recommend it to everyone because the mentally ill deserve to be acknowledged in the same way sufferers of other diseases are. And right now society by and large does choose to ignore its existence.

An excellent inspiring read!!

'Unfaithful Mind' is a well narrated heartbreaking real story or rather i would say a memoir of Marion Gibson, where she tells us about her wonderful love marriage with 'Jack Gibson'. Her world is turned upside down all of a sudden when her 'perfectly happy' well going marriage is put on sudden test by her husband Jacks mental illness or 'schizophrenia' ruining his thoughts and trust on Marion as a good wife.
I was really shocked by reading how Jacks behavior completely changed, he was not the same man who fell in love with the writer!!
The author has so well put across her feeling, of when she had to face the kind of situations, where she had to put up with a mentally ill man. I am sure it was very painful for the author to go through this phase of life wherein her loved one was suffering so seriously, but she stood rock-hard with her husband "through sickness and in health" and she proved to be a perfect loving wife.
The author has used very simple language in her novel and certain parts where 'what was going on in her husbands mind' makes this book really interesting.
Marion has been a role model and real inspiration for all those who go through such situations in life. I felt really good to read that in the end all was well and the authors family didn't fall apart.
I would highly recommend this real non fictional to all esp. those who are firm to save their relation and loved ones, no matter how many hardships they come across. Its a must read!!
