About the Author
Joseph Auner is Chair and Professor of Music at Tufts University. His publications include A Schoenberg Reader, The Cambridge Companion to Schoenberg (with Jennifer Shaw), and Postmodern Music/Postmodern Thought (with Judith Lochhead). A past editor-in-chief of the Journal of the American Musicological Society, Auner is the recipient of grants from the Getty Center for the Arts and Humanities, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.

Walter Frisch is H. Harold Gumm/Harry and Albert von Tilzer Professor of Music at Columbia University. He is the author of numerous books and articles, including Brahms: The Four Symphonies, The Early Works of Arnold Schoenberg 1903–1908, and German Modernism: Music and the Arts. He is the recipient of two ASCAP-Deems Taylor Awards and fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, and the Center for Scholars and Writers at the New York Public Library.

A Fine Collection and a Superb Translation

I am so delighted by this book. The poetry is by authors such as Ludwig Tieck, Franz Clemens Brentano, Josef Von Eichendorf, Novalis, and more. These are some of the finest authors of that lush period known as "Romantic Literature" to have to have there works assembled here. Moreover, the translations are excellent, and the English and German is set side by side in a very practical-sized type, making it extremely comfortable to read and enjoy. I should mention that the book is a sturdy paper back, much better than average, so it's more durable when schlepping it around to and from campus. I would recommend this collection not only to students of German Romantic Literature, but also to those studying English Literature, as writers from both periods were very influenced by each other. This might make for some wonderfully interesting topics for papers your papers. I highly recommend this book for English students or students of German that are studying the Romantic Period.

Nice collection.

This is a nice collection of poetry, which I bought solely for the German, not the translated, poetry. The translations are usually pretty good, faithful to the language and the feeling of the original poem--as much as possible with a translation, of course. There were a few poems where I felt that the English word-choice was not what I would have chosen, and that another would have conveyed the flavor of the English word better, or, less often, that the change in the word-order, while making the poem read more "English," was not the word order I would have used. Nonetheless, for the selection of poetry alone, I give this collection 4 stars. It would probably be a nice gift for a high school student studying German (who enjoys poetry), particularly since adolescence is the perfect time of life to be reading the Romantics, which resonate well with the highs and lows of the teenage years! It would also be nice for someone who studied German years ago, but hasn't read it in a while, since the English side of the text can provide a bit of help when the meaning of a word or two escapes. It's also not a bad choice if you just want to read some German poetry and are having a hard time finding anything in the original, although it is a very slim volume.

How to apologize

If you've ever thought the way a public figure apologized for some transgression didn't sound very apologetic, this is the book for your. Mixing solid linguistic analysis with great story telling, Battistella tackles the meaning of an apology in our culture and the factors that influence when and why apologies work in the public domain. You'll learn that context and past actions play an important role in determining why some seemingly incomplete apologies work while others don't. You'll learn what weaselly language detracts from the goal of an apology. Finally. you'll read some great examples of apologies from US history.

Battistella writes smoothly and finds the right tone to bring academic analysis to a general audience. It's a well crafted book worthy of all the attention it is getting. And even though this book is about public apologies, it made me change my own way of apologizing. Here's the short of it: I name what I did, I acknowledge how it affected the other, I offer an apology.

Insights into making amends

"Sorry About That" offers terrific insight into the public world of mistakes, regret, and making amends. So often when there is conflict or errors that are hurtful, the injured party wants to and needs to be acknowledged and to receive an apology. But so often the apology is self-serving and wanting. This book helps us understand what it really takes to begin the process of making things right.

The examples offered are in the public domaine but the principles apply to our personal lives as well. While it is a linguistic approach to the subject, it is very readable and accessible to all.

Fascinating!

Edwin Battistella’s SORRY ABOUT THAT: THE LANGUAGE OF PUBLIC APOLOGY is one of those books that will likely always be relevant — after all, public figures always seem to be apologizing for something. And this is what’s fun and interesting about the book: Battistella takes a look at public apologies — from those of Mel Gibson to Hillary Clinton to McDonald’s to the U.S. Congress — and looks at the language of these apologies to show the depth of (or lack thereof) their sincerity.

As someone who loves language, I enjoyed the way Battistella deconstructed various forms of apology; as someone who is consistently fascinated by the appalling things people say, I enjoyed seeing their apologies analyzed; we can often tell on a basic level when an apology is insincere, and in his examples, Battistella shows us precisely why. As one example, of Mel Gibson’s apology for his anti-Semitic tirade after being arrested for driving under the influence, Battistella points out that Gibson “attributes his words and behavior to another self—one under the influence of alcohol. But his statement merely highlights the question of whether his inebriated beliefs are more deeply held than those of his sober persona. Gibson’s apology also fails by specifically apologizing only for his belligerence and for drunk driving, without naming his other offenses…”

While these anecdotes are compelling in themselves, the book goes into much more than the good and bad apologies of public figures; it looks at the process of apology, inherited guilt, and apology and gender, among many other issues. Battistella’s examples span from America’s first sex scandal (Alexander Hamilton in the 1790s) to the very famous Clinton-Lewinsky affair, and he looks at the nature of apology and self-reflection as far back as the fourth century. SORRY ABOUT THAT, taking a fascinating look at moments in human history through how we apologize, is great reading for historians, linguists, and anyone interested in celebrity and political culture.

A fun and exciting book

I REALLY enjoyed "Weaver's Needle". It has a fascinating plot that anyone who travels can identify with and enough twists to hold my interest all the way through. The technical and administrative details are believable and add to the story line. It was a compelling read that was hard to put down. Great job!

I found this book to be very interesting. The plot was well thought out and the twists were unique. It addressed issues in the industry that are current while also referencing events from the past. A good book for those interested in airplanes or the airlines.

Outstanding First Novel

Weaver's Needle is the first novel of retired airline manager, Roland
Smith. Using his considerable knowledge of airlines and commercial
aircraft, and the culture of commercial airline employees, Smith has
spun a fictional sequel to the infamous D.B. Cooper hijacking that is
to be admired both for its writing and for its technical accuracy.
The hero, Jack Traner, is the typical engineer, caught up in the
circumstances of his company's poor decisions about profit, employee
welfare, and safety, that is a metaphor for the way many companies
are operating in today's financially driven economy. Trainer is just
one of the many disgruntled employees out there because of the
operating practices used by greedy executives and curmudgeon bosses
who have risen to power by using Machiavellian practices.

After his wife's death caused by the neglect of his superiors, Jack
Traner plots his revenge and carries it out in minute detail. An
unfortunate incident threatens to unravel his perfectly executed
plan; but, as with any good novel, an appropriate twist saves the
day. The only drawbacks are that the desert incident would seem to
be very unlikely and the total escape of a suspect with complete
known history and identification, including age, fingerprints, photos
and known skill sets by the FBI and Interpol could succeed.

Roland Smith's story is very straightforward and easy to follow. His
characters are well developed and the interpersonal relationships are
very strong and believable. I highly recommend anyone interested in
airplanes, airlines, corporation politics, or D.B. Cooper read this
novel. However, anyone interested in a contemporary, well thought
out, hijacker as Robin Hood story, should read it for pure enjoyment.
