Outstanding Book on the Comic Book Form

There are so many books out there on how to draw, and it can be quite daunting at times to choose which to go with (and even harder if you can't flip through them before purchasing them). As an Illustrator, I have enjoyed Bryan Hitch's work for many years now and was elated when I saw this in the ship list at my local comic shop.

First, I feel I must point out...this is NOT a "how to draw" book. It does not talk about proportions, form, movement, or anything really that you would get from that type of book (for that, pick up Burne Hogarth's Dynamic Anatomy or Dynamic Figure Drawing and Muscles in Motion by Glen Fabry). Instead, Bryan Hitch assumes you you already have the necessary skills to draw a picture and goes into to intangibles of a comic page: Composition, Storytelling, Impact, Pace, and the sort. He does spend some time talking about his particular methods, but he does not encourage copying them.

This book is written with a candor so rarely found among artists. Hitch doesn't sugar coat things, he tells you how it really is, how difficult is really is to get into comics. However, with the information contained within these pages, you will have a better grasp on those abstract elements that are missing in so many books and hopefully give you the upper hand.

Not the most informative book

This book is a little repetitive and not exactly a fountain of information. Essentially he says, use a blue pencil, rough everything out, think about composition and story. The chapters are very short and most of the book is given over to pictures of Mr Hitch's own art work, which is fine, but limits you to his particular style and methods. He's obviously talented and has a little bit of information to pass on in this book. But not very much.

Very Informative "How To Make Comics" Book!

Remember, this isn't the "how to draw anatomy" book, this is about how to maintain your patience of making more comics without being too stressed out. It teaches you how to create quicker routes, but longer process of traditionally pencilled and inked work. If you're the guy who likes traditional medium in comics, this is a perfect book for you.

I'm an aspiring artist, and this book is quite helpful, because he described all of his experiences of working with the interior pages. In this book, he explains how to draw with speed and accuracy in the comic industry. In order to make good comics, you gotta know your own rules of making them and turning them in on time. That's what he explains in this book. This is highly recommended to any of you who wants to make quality art in comics!

Mature & tender contemporary romance that touches your heart

Where the Heart Is - is a very sweet love story that is straightforward without game playing and deception. It is a contemporary romance about a man who meets a woman and realizes within 24 hours that she is the one woman he has looked for all his life. She is very taken with him as well but has certain reservations that make her want to keep him from getting too close. However, all of their interaction is genuine and mutual consideration, care, and honesty envelops each page. This is a story about two people - almost exclusively. It is a really romantic tale.
Cam Remington, a geologist, engineer, and owner of a resource company that does work world wide, is back in Los Angeles from his business travels when he meets Shelley Wilde. Shelley is a creator of temporary interior housing designs for the rich rental properties on the West Coast. In a refreshing departure from typical romance beginnings, Cam and Shelley meet in those first pages with the help of Cam's nephew, a lonely boy of 12, and his pet boa constrictor. Within those first few pages, Cam also has the opportunity to view the beauty of Shelley's best all time creation, her home. Cam is a man with extraordinary perception and senses Shelley's true nature as he observes her work, her home, and her interactions with his nephew and the boa.
In the beginning, Cam comes on strong sexually to Shelley. It doesn't take long for him to realize that he cannot proceed in that manner with her and hope to see her again. She is rather prim and proper compared to Cam and does not even consider casual sex as a possibility in her life. Basically, the outline of this story gives us a very mature and wise hero (despite his early come-on attempts) and a kind and gentle woman who has built a rigid life and home to protect her from the world. Cam is truly wiser and much more perceptive than Shelley. He identifies her deeper, true needs that she tries so hard to hide. His pursuit of their relationship and her slow opening to him are the heart of this story and there are many precious scenes to savor as their relationship develops.
This is a Lowell book that was previously published years ago as Traveling Man. She has re-written that book into Where the Heart Is. Although the new title is certainly descriptive of the entire intent of the lesson of this book, the term -traveling man - is used again and again and describes the biggest hurdle Cam must clear to have Shelley as he wants. She wants a home and has built her perfect home. After traveling her entire childhood all over the world with her parents, she desperately wants the pleasures of one home in one place - unchanging. Cam is a traveling man who believes home is with the one you love - wherever that may be - all over the world. Shelley unsuccessfully attempts to turn Cam away again and again because he is a traveling man. She doesn't want a husband who must continually travel. Cam recognizes her real reasons for pulling away from him and will not allow it. It is a tender story of pursuit and capture - all truly done in the name of love. There are a few sensual scenes that rate about a 3.0 out of 5.0 (see More About Me for rating guidelines).
Although this is not a book for my keeper shelf, it is a story I truly enjoyed. I read it easily within a day. It is only 336 pages long and although it tackles some very heavy issues in life, it is not nearly as deep as many other romance novels that I have read. But if you are looking for a feel-good light read, I highly recommend Where the Heart Is. You will love both the leads.

I guess I have the be the party pooper,but I didn't think the book was that great. I felt that there wasnt enough suspense until the very end of the book. Up until that point, I found it kind of average and boring. This is the first book that I have read by Elizabeth Lowell, but I will read one more before I make a true judgement on her books. However, I am glad this book was a freebie because it wouldnt have been worth the money.

Practical Policy Reference

This is a useful book for me to reference, especially when I deal with challenges in security policy framework review. The most impressive pages include the tier 1-2-3 framework, proper wordings in policy, policy sample studies and analysis, complete checklist and questionnaire.

After reading this book or on-and-off reference, I always remember four major elements in a policy:

1. Topic

2. Scope

3. Responsibility

4. Compliance

In addition, I have shared this book with an IT supervisor, he always go for this book for the team reference. I do feel happy to recommend it. Moreover, it readily happens to me I could apply the hints and tips from this book to the revised policy. Meanwhile, compared with the company's policy, it is undoubted organized and logical.

Be honest, in reality, many people still always mix up policy, standard and procedures as well as guidelines and produce a "Spaghetti-like" document to deal with auditor and compliance once a year only, you could say, many companies treat it as a last-minute homework.

Spend Your Money Elsewhere

While this is a good reference, it's value does not match its price. The entire book in not included on the CD and the book does not include a "complete" set of policies. It is certainly enough to get you started, but not enough to complete the task.
If you are considering buying a used copy from an amazon marketplace seller as I did, be careful. The pages did not fit the binder and the CD was missing its setup file. I had to return it.
If you need assistance with security policies and procedures, take a look at Thomas Peltier's other book, Information Security Policies, Procedures and Standards: Guidelines for Effective Information Security Management. It contains almost all of the same material, at a much more reasonable price.

This is one of the best books available for information systems security polices. The book covers tier 1 and tier 2 policies. This book looks at policies as a business enabler where policies support management's organizational goals. Great samples!

About the Author
Kathryn Dixon was born and raised in South Carolina. She has lived in New York City, Los Angeles, Barcelona, Geneva, and beautifully bucolic Charlottesville, Virginia, although Charlotte, North Carolina, is currently home. Travel and all that goes with it--people watching, food tasting, museum visiting, and more--is a favorite pastime that she indulges in the company of her loving and generous British husband, soon to become an American citizen. An activity very close to her heart is volunteering as a puppy raiser for the Guide Dog Foundation. She and her husband are currently fostering Lily, a yellow lab.
