CROWDSOURCING: The eBook

This is a good, compact, inexpensive book on a significant and dynamic subject. I read it in the context of a mini-crowdsourcing discussion of whether we need an eBook review medium for new academic books. I'm thinking that such a review medium already exists on this Amazon site, though I'm not sure it meets Brabham's rather restricted definition of crowdsourcing, which oddly excludes Wikipedia, for example.

I purchased my eBook copy through my Kobo account with University Press Books/Berkeley for $9.89. Our bookstore earns $.98 on my purchase, which is helpful to an at-risk bookstore. I could have bought the Kindle version for $6.82, or directly from MIT Press for $8.95.

Concise Analysis of Crowdsourcing

Daren Brabham defines crowdsourcing as “an online, distributed problem-solving and production model that leverages the collective intelligence of online communities to serve specific organizational goal.” He emphasizes that “the locus of control regarding the creative production of goods and ideas exists between the organization and the public, a shared process of bottom-up, open creation by the crowd and top-down management by those charged with serving an organization’s strategic interests.”

Threadless is a T-shirt company which uses crowdsourcing for product ideas. Doritos sponsors a contest where crowd members develop TV ads for the brand; the winner is aired during the Super Bowl. Peer-to-Patent was a pilot project in which the crowd reviewed patent applications to help the US Patent and Trademark Office identify “prior art.”

A benefit of crowdsourcing is that “outsiders can bring fresh insights to internal problems… A statistical analysis of the InnoCentive service… found that the Solver community was able to solve 29 percent of the problems that the Seekers—all large companies with internal labs and researchers—posted after they were unable to solve these problems internally. Moreover… Solvers on the margins of a disciplinary domain—outsiders to a give problem’s domain of specialty—performed better at solving the problem.”

Another benefit of crowdsourcing is that it can reduce risk. Threadless T-shirt designs and Doritos’ Super Bowl ad use a “peer-vetted creative-production approach… Because the crowd is the eventual user of the product, media content, or space, they are empowered to select the best ideas.”

The author writes about what motivates people to participate in crowdsourcing. Managerial commitment is important. In other words, the community members must feel confident their efforts are taken seriously by the organization. Additionally, Brabham writes about intrinsic motivators (e.g. enjoyment) and extrinsic motivators (e.g. financial rewards). The findings seem to vary depending on the community. “A study on Amazon Mechanical Turk… found that intrinsic motivators generate a higher quality of work from crowds than extrinsic motivators did… many of the most active Turkers average only $2 per hour.” Conversely, “at iStockphoto.com, a stock photography and illustration outsourcing company, I found that the opportunity to earn money and the opportunity to develop one’s creative skills trumped the desire to network with friends and other creative people and outranked other altruistic motivations.”

Brabham’s definition of crowdsourcing excludes endeavors where the “locus of control” lies within either the community or the organization, rather than in between. “In Wikipedia or open-source software projects, the crowd is self-governing and provides its own strategic goals, and the organization is merely incidental to the work of the crowd.” In a campaign where consumers are invited to vote for the next flavor, control resides with the marketer and “the crowd becomes a mere pawn in the organization’s overall goals.” Crowdfunding also does not fit the definition.

Contradicts other authorities on the subject and mostly rehashes other people's works.

Although there is some very good information in this book, it is mostly covered in other books that came before it like Jeff Howe's "Crowdsourcing" (with references to that book making up nearly a third of the content of this entire volume). Also, Brabham redefines crowdsourcing in a number of ways that virtually no one else accepts. By his definition, Wikipedia - the crowning achievement of crowdsourcing efforts - is not actually crowdsourcing because it wasn't organized with hierarchical leadership. Even though I like his limiting crowdsourcing to online activities, the definition continues to go against the definition used by most people and by the person who invented the word (see Howe's work for more on that since he coined the term). If you really want to read something good on crowdsourcing, I recommend Wikinomics.

A tie-in book to the television series Off the Radar, currently scheduled to be shown on tV One Sundays in the 7pm slot, after the Olympics have finished (ie beginning September 2008 to beginning of December 2008). the series follows te Radar trying to live a completely self-supporting and sustainable lifestyle (aka 'the good life') in a small community north of Auckland. the series is a charming look at the challenges of being completely self-sufficient (relying on hunting, growing, fishing), with a small amount of 'how-to' thrown in - but really it's about a bumbling city-boy (te Radar) testing himself and seeing if he can live off the land. te Radar has written a series of yarns about his experiences and the characters he has met while living off the land, which we are publishing as a tie-in to the tV series. the stories will be about events not included in the series.

If you are wondering what you should do to apply for grad school in science, just get this book.

Simply put: this book is a spot on description of what you will go through and what you need to do during the entire application process when you apply for a PhD in the natural sciences.

There is so much here about the applications process that you'll probably be curious about: from what criteria they look for in your application, to what topics you need to cover when writing your statement of purpose, to what level of GRE scores are the minimum, to what questions might be worth asking if they call you in for an interview, and even advice on what to do the summer before entering the program AFTER you have been accepted!

I followed this books advice to the letter at each and every step, and in the end I got into a great program! Really, my only question is why the author chose to call this book "Getting In to Grad School for Physics (and other physical sciences)" and not "Getting in to Grad School for Science (and especially physics)". The specific examples he chose for the score ranges and subfield descriptions are for physics to be sure, but if you are in another field don't let that dissuade you from trying this book. I used it to help me with applying to molecular biology/biophysics programs, and practically all of the advice and the description of the application process was just as relevant there as it would be in physics.

Light reading, interesting book, expensive considering the information included

It was an interesting read, the book is quite short, the info contained in the book is quite useful. The book covers most of the process before you are admited to grad school, and all the burocracy and considerations you must take into account, the book is definitely written for Physics majors, even if the cover states that is also for "Other physical sciences", the information would sure be useful regardless of the degree you are pursuing but everything is oriented towards the physics student, im an engineer. It gives you tips on what to study for the GRE, and for the Physics GRE, gives several recommended references on books and topics to study, as well as all the diplomacy behind the admission process (asking for letters of recommendation, how to address graduate commitees, etc...).

The book is definitely overpriced, considering its very short (I read all of it in about an hour) I recommend getting the Kindle version and saving some money since its not really a book you want to read many times and keep around on your shelf for future reference.

I was hoping that it also provided useful tips on grad school once you are already admitted in a program like study tips, areas of focus, etc... however none of that is present on the book, its basically a tip guide to get admitted into grad school. Overal, it was a nice easy read, informal language and useful information, written by a real physics grad student who decided to remain anonymous under the fake name Vincent Klug...

Once again, I bought this for our son. His comments were that it was straight forward, easy to read, and offered some meaningful insights. If the author writes future editions, perhaps he will add more detail on the application and admissions process. I think a few interviews with faculty and graduate admissions staff at top schools would be helpful too.

contmporary pakistan gets the noir treatment

it's a shame the previous reviewer gave this book one star. there is fair bit of violence here, and sex too, which may not appeal to the exact stratum of society that especially needs to read it. while the vast majority of south asian literature tends to vacillate between depicting pakistan as a nostalgic space of diaspora or a geopolitical hotbed of fundamentalism, this novel does neither. it offers a portrait of contemporary urban pakistan that is complex, layered and entirely unsentimental. at times it is brutal, but the dark brutality rests on a kind of insight that should not be dismissed. a lot of pundits continue to ask why pakistan remains a country at crossroads sixty five years on. "our lady of alice bhatti" is a not book which specifically sets out to answer that question, but it does get at a certain kind of truth about it.

like mohsin hamid's "moth smoke," "our lady" unfolds as a modern crime noir. it's a tragedy about a woman who is punished not for what she has done but for who she is. her story emerges as an indictment against a society that remains handicapped not by it's polarization against the west as the nightly news would have us believe, but rather because of an internal class based system of misogyny that is condoned by a corrupt church-state system. the house itself is not in order, and the external pressures of the so called new great game have spun it out of control.

despite all this it would still be dismissive to categorize this novel as a timely political thriller, because i think it gets at something even deeper than the current state of affairs in pakistan. at it's heart it's a feminist novel. it's about how the bodies of women are being trampled, displaced and discarded in lieu of rational discourse. this war is not being waged by outlaw forces in turbans but by fathers, husbands and brothers who have acquiesced to a society of inequity. and it's happening because a country has turned in on itself. the daily human suffering that has come out of this cannibalization is what "our lady" is really about. combined with hanif's previous "a case of exploding mangoes," it's a must read.

This Novel Has Been Underrated by Many: It's Brilliant

Reading this novel felt to me somewhat like my movie experience with "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" with that delightful, energetic Indian hotel manager--or mis-manager. Of course the novel takes place in Pakistan, not India. And Alice is certainly not like the hotel manager, but the author's narrative voice most certainly is. It is a wonderful voice.

This is a funny-sad novel written in the style of an Pakistani speaking English--by the way it is published in England's English, i.e., humour. Potential readers need to be aware that you may need to be patient getting into the syntax as well as the sytle, one in which the reader isn't always that certain what is happening when a new scene emerges, but then suddenly the reader has the ah-ha enlightenments.

The novel is set in Karachi's Christian slum, the French Colony, with Alice Bhatti, skinny from malnutrition except large in breats, is the delightful main character, "an underpaid junior nurse in an understaffed" [very, very understaffed] "welfare hospital, The Scared. The cast is wonderful including Alice's father, Joseph, who isn't really very wonderful at all--her mother died when Alice was young--but then emerges in a very unique and very surprising role at the end in the epilogue. (The reader will not easily forget the ending of this novel, an ending that gives meaning to the title.) Noor is a 17-year-old hospital worker who simultaneously is caring for his mother, dying of cancer, often the only way to swat away the pests that inhabit the unsanitary place. The not-so-skilled main doctor, Dr. Pereira, and the sardonic nurse supervising Alice, Sisster Hina Alvi. Alice, by the way, was, in the corrupted view of the administration of the nursing school where she was "trained" "its most troublesome student." Delightfully so for the reader.

"Sometimes it seems to her [Alice] that the seven thousand patients in the hospital, hundreds crawling in the corridor, thousands more out in the compound using bricks as pillows, are feeling a bit better because they are in the hospital compound, only a few metres away from operating theatres, labs and drug dispensaries." In other words his hospital is on the edge of the section of Karachi where the wealthy live and work and are cared for.

The novel is filled with back stories, sometimes told obliquely in unexpected places, giving the reader a sudden jolt of additional pleasure--or sadness.

Alice meets Teddy Butt, an underling policeman who waxes his body-builder being and is in charge of getting criminals to and from places including not-Abu Zar. (I will not explain the not-Abu because that is part of the fun of the novel if you like your fun to be on the flip side of tragic. And Teddy's boss is Inspector Malangi who has a rather, well, I won't tell, last day on the job, on the day he retires.
And then comes the epilogue. And I won't say more except that this is a really underrated novel by some of the reviewers here.

funny and insightful

this novel will keep you laughing, but it will also teach your more about life for women in Pakistan than you might want to know. Most interesting is hanif's show the reader how Alice adapts to the severe constrictions of her life...some of them idiosyncratic and others cultural..right to the end. i mean the end.
