This is the history of Theta chapter of Kappa Alpha Order that was established at The Citadel in 1883. It operated sub rosa, initiating cadets quietly for 7 years until banned completely in 1890. Later in the 1920-1924 time period, a small group of men were initiated making a total of 62 in all. It turned out that these 62 men were a very accomplished group in later life to include, college presidents, generals, legislators, bankers, judges and lawyers. In 2008, Kappa Alpha Order established Theta Commission at The Citadel. As a commission, as opposed to a chapter, it initiates only graduates. From five members in 2008 to nearly 300 in 2013, Theta Commission has grown dramatically. Theta Commission counts as members two former presidents of The Citadel, several three star generals, several members of the school's Board of Visitors, former Congressmen, retired Bishops and parish priests. It is a highly distinguished group. The book explores fraternity life inside a military environment through reports of the chapter secretary addressed to the Kappa Alpha Journal. It describes the battles between the Greeks(fraternity men) and the Barbarians( non-fraternity men) for leadership of school committees and social events. There were a total of five fraternities existing in a sub rosa environment at The Citadel during this period. The narrative points out the obvious incompatibility of fraternities with a military environment. Fraternity activity at The Citadel is a little known footnote in the rich history of the South Carolina Military Academy.

About the Author
Thomas Dewey Wise attended The Citadel for two years before transferring to the University of South Carolina where he received his Bachelor of Arts and Juris Doctor degrees. He later earned a Master of Laws degree from George Washington University. After being ad¬mitted to the South Carolina Bar, he entered the United States Army as a member of the Judge Advocate Generals Corps and volunteered for service in the 101st Airborne Division. After infantry officer and airborne schools, he served in Viet Nam where he was awarded the Bronze Star among other decorations. He returned to South Carolina after his military service and served as Assistant County Attorney before being elected to the South Carolina State Senate in 1972. Wise served in the State Senate for twelve years and served eight years on The Citadel Board of Visitors. In 2012, South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley awarded him the Order of the Palmetto, the state’s high¬est civilian honor. He is a member of the Graves Province Court of Honor of Kappa Alpha Order. He and his wife, Pat, live on Fenwick Island in Colleton County, S.C.

A well written and copiously researched book with many excellent photographs which will be of primary interest to those who belonged at any time to Greek Letter organizations at The Citadel, which the author attended, with particular reference to the Kappa Alpha Order or fraternity. Not of general interest except perhaps for Charlestonians whose family members belonged at some point in the organization's history. I read the entire book, however, and admire the author for his diligence with an arcane subject.! Judysgardn

About the Author
Karen O’Connor is the Jonathan N. Helfat Distinguished Professor of Political Science and the Founder and Director Emerita of the Women & Politics Institute at American University. Before coming to American University, Karen taught political science for seventeen years at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, where she was the first woman to receive the university’s highest teaching award. She has been recognized by several associations as the most outstanding woman in political science and public administration as well as by the Southern Political Science Association (SPSA) for her contributions to the discipline. She has served on the American Political Science Association (APSA) and SPSA councils and as chair of the Law and Courts and Women and Politics Research sections of the APSA.

Larry J. Sabato is the founder and director of the University of Virginia Center for Politics. A Rhodes Scholar, Sabato has taught more than tens of thousands of students in his career at Oxford University, Cambridge University, and the University of Virginia. At the University of Virginia, Sabato has received every major teaching award, including the university’s highest honor, the Thomas Jefferson Award. Upon entering my American Government class, my professor immediately let everyone know that the class would be everything but easy. He claimed that we should not take it as an easy A class and that in order to pass we would need a good American Government book that would cover everything from the types of government to the elections. He ensured that we purchase this book because he claimed that despite it not being the newest edition, it still covered everything he would teach. It arrived two days after I ordered it and proved to be one the most useful textbooks I've ever used, when my teachers notes did not thoroughly explain, I would turn to the book and it would explain everything I needed to know. I would recommend this text to individuals who are taking an American government course that focuses primarily on the election, due to 2016 being an election year, my teacher has chosen to focus on this. Definitely a good text to rent or own.

as far as college textbooks go i am appreciating their laid back style that allows the student to read the text easily. this way the student is able to understand the material without first being taught it. also, this book is not as large as some other textbooks for other subjects i am taking, making it easily portable, as well as an adequate amount of material to cover. alot of times i hate to buy a book when we only have time to get through part of the chapters in the book.

John Marzillier is a clinical psychologist and writer living in Oxford. He has a MA in Psychology & Philosophy for the University of Oxford, a MSc (Clinical Psychology) and a PhD (Psychology) from the University of London, and an MA in Creative Writing from Bath Spa University College. He had a long career as an academic clinical psychologist and as a psychotherapist, having been trained in behavioural, cognitive and psychodynamic therapies. What a wonderful and original concept for a children's book! The story is not only amusing and entertaining, but there's a message important for kids about choosing friends wisely because they have an important impact on who you are and who you grow up to be. After an unlikely encounter with an electric razor that the beard tries to befriend, Weird the Beard becomes... Murray the Moustache. Not only does my three year old niece LOVE it, I do too. We're reading it every night, along with Mr. Sussman's other book, Silly the Seed. They go great together.

A fun and original book that caught my son's attention and made us both laugh out loud. My son keeps going back for more Weird the Beard. Scott Sussman has written another funny story to keep us laughing. I really enjoyed the pictures too. I highly recommend this book to parents.

This book has little to offer

The book is essentially in two parts: the first half on production and the second half on the final film. Neither part goes into enough depth to be particularly insightful. Admittedly, I went through the first section quickly since I am more interested in the film itself.

The first half goes over the production, technical aspects, and the people behind the creation of the film. The content is only surface information, written to be easily understood and probably not very useful to anyone deeply interested in production. I think the DVD of Spirited Away has extra features which cover much of the same information. This section also covers some general information on Studio Ghibli which can be found in dozens of other books on Miyazaki or anime. The information on the company is not used to directly offer understanding to Spirited Away, so it feels like it's just taking up space.

Of interest to me in the first section is how Osmond easily dismisses the film as being a disjointed narrative due to creative differences between Miyazaki and one of his staff. This was annoying to me since I got this book because I think the film's narrative is interesting and brings the film together fairly well. And yet Osmond does not further explore these criticisms or offer an alternative view for his argument on the narrative structure. It gives me the impression that Osmond doesn't really understand this film enough to offer a deeper perspective, so he dismisses it instead.

The second half of the book is about the film itself, and was why I purchased the book. The trouble with this section is that it is a chronological summary of the film with lightly dabbled commentary. The commentary is not especially insightful or always present; the film ending, for instance, is summarized without commentary or further exploration.

The overall effect of this is, for instance, that No Face is brought up once for every appearance he makes, but is never really discussed. If Osmond had gathered up all his separate summary/commentary on No Face and put it together in one section, he could have more effectively used that space to explore the creature and what it's doing in the film. Instead, there's no analysis, no useful exploration, and no depth to the content of the book. The same goes for all major themes, motifs, the other characters, and plot elements; Osmond states when they show up, and might make a comment on it, (some of which are even interesting,) but none of it is discussed.

I bought this book thinking that it was meant to offer deeper insight into the film. This book doesn't do that. I'm not sure what this book is intended for, or who is meant to read it. Since I've seen the film, I don't need to be told what happened in the film, so this book isn't for me. If you've seen the film, you don't need this book.

If you're somehow unable to watch Spirited Away and want to experience the film vicariously through a summary, then you might be interested in this. Otherwise, you can probably gain more insight yourself by just watching the film again, or watch the film with the commentary on, or check out the DVD extras.

Finally! An excellently written analysis of an animated film!

This book is a marvel, especially for the Miyazaki ignorant (who know little of the man outside of his work.) He discusses the man's life, the Japanese mythology and the story that appeals to all cultures.

Not only does the written speak wonderfully of the animation itself, but defends it's story, and places the film in a realm few films touch, one for kids and adults without irony.

Mr. Osmond brings up everything from tracing Miyazaki's Marxist roots to the films he's making now, and even discusses a bit on anime fanboys discussing the animation autuer on internet forums.

Well worth the read and has honestly made me loved the film even more.

Just Watch the Movie

The three-star review is more of a reflection on the entire genre of books about films, and not as much about the actual book in question. Although I found that the insightful analysis of the wonderful film "Spirited Away" was generally good, the entire time I was reading it I was thinking "Why not just watch the movie again?"

I don't think an entire book is necessary to analyze a film - perhaps just 5 to 10 pages at the most. The book itself didn't have much artwork, and I thought the film was a little too over-analyzed. For some reason, the author keeps hinting that certain scenes have a sensual element to them, which I didn't see at all. I like reading about movies, but find that a well-reasoned review tends to be enough written about a film. Film is a visual and emotional art form, and does not have to be analyzed too deeply to be enjoyed.

A Great Little Book

If you've made it this far you know who Orage is. He has over 200 exercises in the first section and 16 short essay in the second section.
The exercises are mainly for work on the intellectual centre but with different emphasises on Memory, Imagination and Thinking. For example Number 13 on page 44 "While visualising some verse, write down a regular set of number. Reverse." The exercises start off relatively simple and become progressively difficult.
There are a few emotional and motor centre exercises, however these seem to be in the minority.
The essays are useful:

How to Learn to Think
How not to be Bored
On Dying Daily
The last listed essay includes a particularly difficult exercise to grasp which sounds quite easy. Orage assures the reader he or she shall become more skilled with practice.
Much like the game of chess this book is easy to understand but no doubt would take a lifetime to master. Highly recommended and undoubtably one to give the consciousness a good going over.
