A wonderful work on the tragic schism

James Likoudis is a convert from Eastern Orthodoxy and works hard to try and reunite the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Churches. Little of the work is actually written by James; most of it is translations. My text, the second edition, a biography of Demetrios Kydones and the apologia for his conversion, a chapter on Eastern Orthodoxy, one on Rome, the teachings of St. Thomas Aquinas, a talk on Nikos Nissiotis and Alexis Stawrowsky, Aquinas' "Contra Errores Graecorum," and letters by St. Peter Damian, John de Fonitbus, and finally a talk given by Pope John Paul II.
To the reviewer who said this is modern day prooftexting: how can it be? Likoudis writes little of his own. All apologetics (what would be contraversial) is from before 1400.

Healing the Tragic Schism

In this well-written book, James Likoudis demonstrates the doctrinal incoherence and irrationality of what has been aptly termed the Byzantine Schism. He shows convincingly that the divine Primacy of the See of Rome in the Church and the dual Procession of the Holy Spirit are dogmatic truths lived and professed in the Church long before the tragic Schism between the churches solidified. Likoudis' book should be read by all Christians, and especially by those Eastern Orthodox seeking a serene examination of the doctrinal issues still dividing their churches from full communion with the Apostolic See.

Of little value

This polemical book has done little or nothing towards its stated end: "ending the byzantine schism". That is because it presents only one side of the theological controversies, the Roman Catholic viewpoint. Little to no attempt to present the Eastern view of such matters as Papal primacy and infallibility and the dual procession of the Holy Spirit in any form other than that of simplistic caricature. The only possible value I see in this book is its reprinting of Thomas Aquinas' "Contra Errorem Graecorum" ("On the Error of the Greeks") which is of historical value, and also may contribute to an appreciation of the narrow and dubious theological grounds on which such doctrines as the eternal procession of the Holy Spirit from the Father and the Son really rest.
